Integrating Sustainability with Growing IT Demands

by Bob Eskew, Founder and CEO of Automated Systems Design

Sustainability has earned formal recognition in all areas of the building industry, all areas that is except for one – information technology (IT).

Despite repeated efforts from cabling companies and industry organizations, no formal Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) IT certification or rating system has been developed to specifically acknowledge structured cabling green initiatives. While the LEED Green Building Rating System does provide technology-based credits, these credits are limited to lighting, HVAC, and power consumption. The only way structured cabling products and designs can contribute to LEED credits, is indirectly through energy savings that meet the standards of the Energy & Atmosphere category.
